: ECG Equipment Thief Jailed Five Years
An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Asimah Delali, a rubbish collector, to five years in prison for stealing property belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to the Ghanaian Times report published on Thursday, June 19, 2025, the incident happened earlier this year when Delali was caught with stolen ECG equipment, including some essential power cables and metal parts used for electricity distribution. He was arrested after ECG officials noticed the missing items during routine checks in the Accra Central area.
Police investigations revealed that Delali, who often picked rubbish around ECG installations, used that as a cover to steal the equipment bit by bit. He later sold some of the items as scrap to metal dealers in the area.
The prosecutor told the court that Delali’s actions had caused ECG significant loss and also disrupted electricity supply to some homes and businesses. When he was arrested, he admitted to the crime and pleaded guilty.
In her judgement, the presiding judge, Mrs. Susana Eduful, said the sentence was meant to serve as a warning to others who may be tempted to steal national property, especially things that affect public services.
Some residents who were present in court said they were satisfied with the ruling and hoped it would reduce such crimes in the future. ECG has also cautioned the public to report suspicious activities near their installations
The five-year jail term.
