DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL CONFIRMS-SUSPENDED CHIEF JUSTICE GERTRUDE TORKONOO DRAGS GHANA TO ECOWAS COURT.

Source:The Ghanaian Times.

The Deputy Attorney-General has revealed that suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has filed a lawsuit against the Republic of Ghana at the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

According to the Deputy AG, the case was filed in protest of her recent suspension, which she argues violated her rights and the principles of natural justice. Although details of the suit are yet to be made public, the Deputy AG stated that the government is preparing to respond appropriately through legal means.

Justice Torkonoo was suspended following allegations surrounding her conduct in office. Her suspension has since sparked public debate, with some legal minds and civil society groups calling for transparency in the process.

In response to the suit, the government has maintained that it followed due constitutional procedures in taking the action against her. However, Justice Torkonoo believes the move was politically motivated and has therefore turned to the ECOWAS Court to seek redress and possible reinstatement.

The ECOWAS Court of Justice, based in Abuja, Nigeria has the authority to hear human rights cases brought against member states, including Ghana. Legal observers say the outcome of the case could have significant implications for judicial independence and governance in the sub-region.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Attorney General has assured the public that Ghana will defend its position in line with the law and is confident that the court will arrive at a fair ruling.

10% REWARD FOR WHISTLE BLOWERS WHO REPORT ILLEGAL GOLD TRADE- PRESIDENT MAHAMA.

News headline analysis.

Source:The Ghanaian Times.

President of the Republic of Ghana,His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has announced that,in curbing the issue of illegal gold trade, there is going to be a 10% reward for individuals who report such illegal activities. An analysis of the image is below:

1. Does the image accurately represent the headline’s message?

Yes. The image of President Mahama giving a speech supports the headline because it visually confirms that the president made a public announcement. Since the headline is about a policy initiative against illegal gold trade, the image adds credibility by showing the president himself addressing the issue.

2. What emotions does the image evoke? (Does it create urgency, sympathy, or controversy?)

The image evokes a sense of seriousness and leadership. It shows that the president is taking a firm stance on a national issue, which can create a feeling of urgency about illegal gold trading. For citizens affected by the consequences of illegal mining, it may also give a feeling of hope or relief, knowing that action is being taken.

3. Is the image manipulated or biased? (Does it frame the story in a particular way?)

No, the image is not manipulated or biased. It simply shows the president doing what presidents are expected to do;speak on matters of national concern. However, by using this image, the newspaper may be intentionally framing the president as active, responsible, and in control, which could influence how readers perceive the announcement.

4. How does composition affect storytelling? (Consider framing, lighting, and focus.)

Framing: If the president is centered in the image, it makes him the focal point, emphasizing his authority.

Lighting: Likely clear and professional, giving the event an official and credible look.

Focus: Sharp focus on the president ensures that the message is not lost, and it reminds the viewer that this is a direct policy statement from the nation’s highest office.

5. Does the image add depth to the story or simply reinforce the headline?

The image mostly reinforces the headline rather than adding new information. It supports the idea that the president made an official announcement, but it does not provide further detail on how the 10% reward system will work or the impact of illegal gold trading. A more informative image   such as one showing illegal gold miners or affected communities — could have added more depth.

6. Would a different image change the reader’s perception of the news?

Yes. An image of illegal gold operations, confiscated gold, or community members affected by mining could make the issue feel more urgent and real. It might shift the focus from leadership to the effects of the problem. However, the current image keeps the focus on the president’s initiative, which is the main angle of the headline.

7. How does the image compare to others covering the same story?

Other outlets might use images of mining sites, law enforcement, or public sensitization campaigns. In contrast, The Ghanaian Times chose to highlight the president alone. This makes the story feel more presidential and policy-driven, rather than investigative or community focused.

8. Is the image culturally or politically significant? (Does it reflect societal biases?)

Yes. Politically, the image positions President Mahama as a leader who is addressing illegal mining, which has long been a national concern in Ghana. Culturally, it also reflects how much trust is placed in high-level political figures to drive change. It shows the media’s tendency to focus on leaders rather than on the people directly affected or the root causes of illegal gold trade.

To draw the curtains down, the image of President Mahama giving a speech strongly supports the headline by confirming that he publicly announced the 10% reward for whistleblowers. It presents the president as active and concerned about illegal gold trade. While the image does not offer much depth about the issue itself, it effectively emphasizes the official nature of the message and the government’s commitment to tackling illegal activities. A different image could have shifted the focus to the human or environmental impact, but this one keeps the spotlight on leadership and policy action.
