In the Weta rice belt of Ghana’s Volta Region, a transformative movement is emerging, set to reshape rice farming in a world facing water scarcity and rising temperatures. A dynamic partnership between UK and Ghanaian experts has introduced farmers to Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD), a cutting-edge irrigation approach that saves water, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthens crop resilience while preserving yields.


This bold initiative is fueled by a £220,000 grant from Innovate UK’s African Agriculture Knowledge Transfer Partnership (AAKTP), uniting Lancaster University, the Crops Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-CRI), and Newage Agric Solutions Ltd. The team is customizing AWD for Ghana’s unique farming conditions, while also contributing to global efforts to enhance sustainable rice production across West Africa.


Rice, a cornerstone food for over half the planet’s population, has traditionally relied on flood irrigation—a practice that consumes 3,000 liters of water per kilogram and releases significant methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than CO₂. “We were inundating our fields and damaging our environment,” says Dr. Stephen Yeboah of CSIR-CRI. “Our old methods grew crops but also hastened ecological harm.”
